Khan Academy App Icon Review and DemoAre you having trouble remembering how to multiply fractions or how to solve for variable x? Could you use a refresher so you can help you child with homework?   Have no fear.  Kahn Academy is here! Khan Academy, the mobile app and website service,  is an excellent reference resource for getting quick tip tutorials on a wide variety of subjects including math, science, economics and finance.    This free service offers short videos, typically 1-5 minutes long on a specific topic, that take you step by step through the problem solving process.    You can learn for free, anywhere at anytime.

There are over 4000 resource videos!  Topics start with early childhood basics such as addition and subtraction, and go all the way through advanced mathematical and scientific subjects like Inferential Statistics, AP Calculus and Organic Chemistry.  If you would like a sequential flow to learn an entire subject, the video topics are arranged in such a way that you can start with early lessons and progress to advanced details.  Or, you can easily do a random search for the specific topic in which you need a quick refresher.

Students, teachers and parents are all “customers” of Khan Academy.  While the mobile app offers access to all of the video content additional resources and features are available on the web based app.  The web based version offers a more enhanced visual appeal, student exercises and practice options.  Teachers using Khan Academy website tools in the classroom can instantly see and monitor student progress.  The mobile app focuses primarily on access to the reference videos.  To use the mobile app you do not need to sign in a create a log in!  You can browse, search and view any of the content.   However, creating an account will allow you to earn points and badges, and help you keep track of which videos you have watched.

Internet access requirements:  By default the video tutorials are not downloaded to your mobile device, therefore requiring Internet access to view them.  However, if you have a need to view the videos in offline mode (no Internet access), you can download videos individually or an entire category.  To do this, you will need to be connected to the Internet, preferably with wi-fi and not cellular, as data rates may apply.  Tap and hold any desired video or category to download it to your mobile device.

A distinguishing factor of Khan Academy is that all of the site’s web resources and mobile content are available to anyone completely free of charge and they don’t require that you create an account to have access.  You will not receive advertisements or prompting for in app purchases. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, or adult returning to the classroom after 20 years.
